Manual for the Rapid Ecological Reserve Determination of Inland Wetlands (Version 2.0)

  • Social-Ecological Systems
  • water resources
  • Wetland Management

The first step in the Water Resource Management cycle is the determination of a vision for the desired future state of the resource. This vision sets both the aspirations and constraints for the future use of the water resource. A protection-based classification system is expressed as a choice between four Ecological Management Categories (EMCs). To complete these four levels of Reserve determination, different levels of inputs of time, specialists and stakeholders are required. References are made to studies for higher and lower confidence levels of determination. Although references are made to other levels of reserve determination, this document focuses only on the low confidence or Rapid level of Reserve Determinations for Wetlands of all types, (excluding lakes, since their size, complexity precludes them from rapid, low confidence assessments). An example of the application of the method has also been provided, as an annexure to the report.
